FERRUM, Va. -- Player of the Week awards have been announced by the Conference Carolinas league office and Ferrum College had two players honored,
Zamari Copley and
Ryan Schmidt.
Copley was named Defensive Player of the Week, his first such honor, and Schmidt earned his second Special Teams Player of the Week honor. Both played critical roles in Ferrum's 35-33 win Saturday, October 25, at home over Erskine College in the first ever meeting between the school schools.
Copley had five tackles, a pair of interceptions and a pass breakup. His first interceptions came early in the first quarter when he picked off an errant Erskine pass at the EC10 yard line and returned it to the five yard line. Two plays later, the Panthers went out in front at 11:37 of the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown run up the middle by
Jahylen Lee. Copley's second interception came at 2:31 of the second quarter, stopping a drive by the Flying Fleet at the Ferrum 19 yard line.
Schmidt blocked a punt, grabbed the loose ball and fought his way into the end zone for a scoop-n-score touchdown at 5:18 of the first quarter. Schmidt also earned Conference Carolinas Special Teams Player of the Week on October 4, following Ferrum's 28-25 comeback win over Shorter University Saturday, October 4, at home.
Ferrum is now 3-5 overall and 2-2 in Conference Carolinas under second-year Head Coach Kevin Sherman. The Panthers travel Saturday, November 1, to North Greenville University for a league game, starting at noon in Tigerville, South Carolina.
