Scott Puschell's 28-yard in field goal, his third of the day, clinched a 37-34 overtime win for Ferrum College over Bridgewater College in non-conference football action this afternoon at home.
Ferrum stopped Bridgewater's drive in the overtime period when Keenan Tiller fumbled on the Ferrum 15 yard line and the Panthers'
Maureik Goode fell on the ball. Goode was in on eight tackles, one solo and seven assisted, and made a pair of interceptions, which he returned for a total of 34 yards.
The Panthers drove to the BC 11 yard line, where Puschell split the uprights for the game-winning field goal. Earlier in the game, Puschell was successful on field goal attempts of 31 and 19 yards.
Ferrum opened a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a
Matt Dobson to
Makya Jackson 21-yard pass and a Mike vann 31-yard run. The Panthers made it 21-0 on Dobson's 1-yard run.
Nathan Jackson helped Bridgewater (2-1) trim the lead to 21-7 on a one-yard run, but Puschell's first FG of the day, a 31-yarder with no time left in the first half, gave Ferrum a 24-7 lead heading into the locker room.
Bridgewater scored two TDs in the third quarter, while holding Ferrum scoreless. Ryan Richmond scored on a 19-yard pass from Hagan Driskell, and Tate Thomas scored on a one-yard run to trim the lead to 24-20. Puschell booted a 19-yard FG to open the fourth quarter, upping Ferrum's lead to 27-20. Driskell then found Tyler Beiler from 12 yards out for a 27-27 tie.
Aaron Johnson scored next for Ferrum on a 16-yard pass from Dobson to put Ferrum on top 34-27, but it was short-lived as Bridgewater scored on its next possession on Ryan Richmond's three-yard TD reception from Driskell to send the game into overtime.
Bridgewater had 429 yards in total offense, 142 rushing and 287 passing. Ferrum had 407 in yards total offense, 313 rushing and 94 passing.
Steven Harris had 103 yards rushing on nine carries, averaging 11.4 yards per carry. Dobson was 9-15 passing for 94 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Defensively, Zach Leonard had six solo and three assisted tackles, while
Delano Hall had four solos and five assists.
Driskell was 19-29 passing for 287 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. Patrick Smoot had 100 yards on four receptions. Defensively, Aubry Dicks had four solo and two assisted tackles, while TJ Montague had three solos and four assisted.
Ferrum (1-1) will play Southern Virginia University next Saturday, Sept. 26, in Buena Vista, Virginia. The non-conference game will be played at Parry McCluer High School with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
