Panthers Run Over Shenandoah

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College rolled up 487 yards on the ground to romp past Shenandoah University 56-20 in USA South football action this afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium. 

The Panthers (3-4, 3-1 USA South) had three players  eclipse the century mark in rushing.  FB Quintel Banks had a game-high 122 yards rushing on 11 carries, and scored two touchdowns.  QB Marcus Mayo had 117 yards on 11 carries, and TB Roger Smith had 101 yards and a score on 10 carries.

TB Steven Harris started things off for Ferrum with a five-yard touchdown run at 11:09 left in the first quarter.  Shenandoah's Brad Martz fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Tevin Hanley scooped the ball up and dashed 24 yards to give Ferrum a 14-0 lead just over four minutes into the game. Harris made it 21-0 Ferrum when he punched in from two yards out at 6:19 of the second quarter.

Shenandoah scored with 15 seconds remaining when Martz hauled in a five-yard pass from Wright, and with the missed extra point, made it 21-6 at the half.  WR Rico Wallace caught a pass over the middle and raced 56 yards for a score to trim the lead to 21-13 with 13:04 remaining in the third quarter. 

Harris answered on the ensuing kickoff, returning it 93 yards for a score and a 28-13 lead.  Banks added a pair of touchdowns in the next five minutes with rushes of 21 and 37 yards, respectively, to stretch Ferrum's lead to 42-13.

Wallace hauled in his second touchdown catch of the game, this time for 58 yards, from Wright with 7:42 remaining in the third quarter.  Smith and TB Thomas Porter put the game out of reach with touchdown runs of 51 and 34 yards in the fourth quarter to make the final score 56-20.

Mayo went 4-8 passing with 45 yards and one interception.  QB Daniel Wright was 19-27 passing for 315 yards accounting for three touchdowns.  Wright was sacked once and threw one interception.  Shawn Lloyd was 0-7 passing with an interception.  Wallace made nine receptions for 224 yards, reaching the end zone twice.

DT Willie Taylor made four solo and five assisted tackles, including two tackles for loss, to lead the Panthers defensive effort.  Larry Gibbs made eight solo tackles and one assisted tackle for the Hornets (2-5, 2-2 USA South).  Joshua Rogers accounted for 13 total tackles, including three solo stops.

For the game, Ferrum accumulated 523 yards in total offense yards, while Shenandoah had 405 yards.  Ferrum's time of possession totaled 35:04, compared to 24:56 for the Hornets.

Ferrum returns to action next Saturday, October 30, at Christopher Newport University.  The USA South clash kicks off at 1 p.m. in Newport News, Virginia.
