WINCHESTER, Va. --
Marcus Mayo rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 101 yards and another score as Ferrum College won its sixth straight football game with a 41-28 USA South triumph this afternoon at Shenandoah University.
The Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 lead courtesy of a pair of first-quarter touchdowns by
Steven Harris, rushes of 35 yards and one yard. Shenandoah answered with Daniel Wright's 1-yard run early in the second quarter to trim the lead to 14-7. Mayo then scored two of his three rushing touchdowns, a 70-yard scamper and a 5-yard plunge, to give the Panthers a 28-7 halftime lead.
Dontavious Gilbert scored on a 70-yard touchdown reception from Mayo to open the third quarter, then Mayo scored his third rushing TD with a 6-yard run with five minutes left in the quarter for a 41-7 Panther lead. Kyle Feldman (14-yard reception), Byron Mitchell (20-yard interception return) and Daniel Wright (1-yard run) scored touchdowns to close the gap for Shenandoah.
Harris had 135 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries for the Panthers, which rolled up 314 yards rushing and 415 yards in total offense. Mayo was 4-10 passing with one TD, two interceptions and no sacks. Gilbert had 91 yards and a score on three receptions.
Wright was 23-45 passing for 232 yards and a score for the Hornets (4-4, 3-2). Wright was sacked twice and picked off three times. Shenandoah closed with 301 yards total offense (232 passing, 69 rushing).
Melvin Trotter had 12 tackles for the Panthers, including eight solo, two for loss and one sack. Mitchell made 10 tackles for Shenandoah, including two for loss, and had two interceptions.
The win keeps Ferrum (6-2, 5-0) tied for first place in the USA South with Christopher Newport University. The Panthers face CNU at home next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at W.B. Adams Stadium in a game that could decide the USA South regular season title.
