FERRUM, Va. -- The Ferrum College men's basketball team beat Averett University 92-89 at home Jan. 11 at home, holding off a furious charge late in the game to preserve the USA South win. Six players scored in double digits for Ferrum, including all five starters. The Cougars also saw all five starters score in double figures.
The Panthers built a big lead in the first half, leading 49-31 with 36 second left in the half when
Charles Warren knocked down a pair of free throws.Â
Ferrum led 89-74 on
Marcus Mayo's three-pointer from the left side with 3:26 left on the clock. Averett then staged a furious rally to get within three points, outscoring the Panthers 15-3 in the waning moments. The Cougars had a last-second three-point basket at the buzzer bounce off the ceiling in Swartz Gym.
Nick English led the Panthers with 17 points on 7-12 shooting, and added seven rebounds. Mayo had 16 points and four assists,
Charles Warren had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Javonte Rankin had 12 points.Â
Daryl Hart and
Lamont King each tallied 11 points in the USA South win.
Averett (6-9, 1-2 USA South) was led by Paul Porter's 23 points and nine rebounds. Justin Pierce and Johnathan Settere had 16 points each, while Sunil Ram and Marquis Scott had 12 points each. Scott registered a game-high 13 boards.

Ferrum (9-5, 2-1 USA South) returns to action Saturday, Jen. 14, at Christopher Newport University. Tip off is set for 4 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
