NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Tim Reynolds rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns, but Ferrum College fell 21-19 to Christopher Newport University in USA South football action at Pomoco Field. The game was Ferrum's final league contest against the Captains, who begin play in the New Jersey Athletic Conference as a football-only member next fall.

Harvey Taylor's 10-yard touchdown run spotted the Panthers a 6-0 lead (kick blocked) at 0:59 of the first quarter. The Captains scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, followed by Reynolds' first score of the night, a three-year touchdown run. Ferrum's two-point PAT failed and CNU owned a 14-12 lead at halftime.

With just over a minute left in the third quarter, Rudy Rudolph hauled in a 58-yard touchdown pass and the Captains led 21-12. The Panthers drove 70 yards in nine plays, capped by Reynolds' eight-yard run to trim the lead to 21-19 with 4:29 left in regulation. Following Ferrum's score, CNU drove to the Panthers 30 yard line with three seconds left to play, then turned the ball over on downs at the Ferrum 45 yard line as time expired.

Marcus Morrast was 10-22 passing for 212 yards and two touchdowns for the Captains (3-2, 3-0 USA South), while Rudy Rudolph hauled in six passes for 148 yards and a score. Rashad Johnson and Al Matthews had 10 tackles each for Ferrum (0-4, 0-2 USA South). The Panthers return to action Saturday, Oct. 11, against Maryville College, which shared last year's USA South title and represented the league in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
