WINCHESTER, Va. -- Shenandoah University rolled up 420 yards rushing in a 45-20 non-conference football win over Ferrum College tonight at Shentel Stadium. Cedrick Delaney had 130 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries for the Hornets, Drew Ferguson had 112 yards and a score on nine carries, and Dalaun Richardson had 98 yards on 16 carries. Ferguson was 12-21 passing for 132 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
Shenandoah jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, but Ferrum cut the deficit to 14-7 with
Troy Helton's four-yard touchdown reception from
Tim Reynolds at 8:00 of the second. Less than four minutes later, the Hornets went up 21-7, only to see Reynolds score on a four-yard run with 1:56 left in the first half to close the gap to 21-13.
The Hornets would score a touchdown and a field goal in the third quarter to take a 31-13 lead, but Ferrum responded with
Dominique Lesine's 13-yard touchdown run with just over five minutes remaining in the quarter to trim the lead to 31-20. Ferguson scored on a 16-yard run at 8:28 of the fourth quarter to push Shenandoah out in front 38-20. The Hornets then picked off an errant Reynolds pass on the first play of the ensuing drive, returned it to the Ferrum three yard line, and scored on the next play for the final count.
Reynolds threw for 197 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions on 13-23 passing for Ferrum, and led the team with 82 yards and a score on 17 carries.
Jatavious Adams had 13 tackles for Ferrum, while Michael Messick led Shenandoah (2-1) with 10 stops.
The Panthers (0-2) return to action Saturday, Sept. 27, at home against North Carolina Wesleyan College during Ferrum's Homecoming, Hall of Fame and Family Weekend celebration. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at W.B. Adams Stadium.
