Big First Half Propels Ferrum Men to Victory Over Eastern Mennonite

FERRUM, Virginia -- Calvin Washington's game high 23 points propelled the Ferrum College men's basketball team to an 81-56 win against Eastern Mennonite University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play tonight in Swartz Gymnasium.

THE BASICS
Ferrum jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, from three different scorers. Tahli Oden's jumper off a steal from Washington sparked a 18-0 run for the Panthers over three minutes of play. Washington threw down a dunk after getting one of his four steals in the game that brought the home crowd to its feet. Andre Pacheco put an end to a 5 minute scoring drought for Eastern Mennonite when he converted a basket and free throw after being fouled. Ferrum closed out the half on a 13-2, Washington and Alfredo Abel-Rivera combining for 10 of the Panthers final points in the half. Both teams were held scoreless in the final two minutes of play.

In the second half Eastern Mennonite outscored Ferrum 38-34 and shot 68 percent from the field, compared to the Panthers 47 percent. Both teams traded baskets in the early going of the second half. Ferrum increased it's lead to 34 points on Cannon Doub's first career collegiate basket from behind the arc. In the final 6:30 of the game, the Royals outscored the Panthers 10-4, giving Ferrum a convincing ODAC win in Swartz Gym.

Coach Patrick Corrigan's team will be back on the court Wednesday, January 18, at home against Washington and Lee University. The ODAC game is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 p.m. at Swartz Gym.
