Volleyball Opens Season with Split

FERRUM, Va. -- The Ferrum College volleyball team opened its 2025 campaign at home in a non-conference tri-meet today at Swartz Gym. The Panthera beat Johnson & Wales University 3-0, then fell 3-1 to Virginia Union University.

FERRUM-JWU
The Panthers ran through the first match of the day, allowing just 22 points combined in the final two sets. Makayla Rumley posted 10 kills in her first match at Ferrum, and Catherine Bennett had nine kills and six digs in her Panther debut. Harleigh Propst closed with 17 assists and five kills, Kalee Bunn had 12 assists and Danielle Worthy added seven kills. 

FERRUM-VUU
Ferrum dropped the first two sets, but came back to take the third. The Panthers trailed 24-16 in the fourth set before mounting a comeback by fighting off seven match points. That rally included a kill each by Worthy and Propst, and a block by Rumley and Bennett. Ferrum trimmed the lead to 24-23, but Virginia Union ended the match on Alexandra Perot's kill.

Bennett closed the match with 11 kills, Worthy had 10 kills and Rumley had seven kills. Propst dished out 20 assists and had eight digs, while Daniela Castillo and Avery Tucker were both solid defensively with 17 and 10 digs, respectively.

UP NEXT
Coach Shelbylynn Adair's team will be back on court Tuesday, September 9, at Warren Wilson College. The non-conference match is set for 5:00 p.m. in Asheville, North Carolina.
