Keydets Top Panthers in Football

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Ferrum College's football team competed this afternoon at Virginia Military Institute, falling 42-7 to the NCAA Div. I Keydets at Alumni Memorial Field.

RECORDS
VMI 1-1
Ferrum 0-2

THE BASICS
Noah Grevious rumbled 78 yards for a touchdown at 9:07 of the first quarter to open scoring. Then following a blocked Ferrum punt that gave VMI the ball on the Ferrum four yard line, Morgan McPhaul hauled in a short touchdown pass from Collin Shannon to put the Keydets out in front 14-0. Aslin Shipe plunged into the end zone from a yard out at 7:25 of the second quarter to make it a 21-0 game.

The Keydets turned the ball over on downs with just under five minutes left in the second quarter, failing on a 4th-and-2 attempt at their own 22 yard line. A face mask penalty on Ferrum's first play moved the ball to the VMI 11, then a pass interference call advanced the ball to the VMI two. Two plays later, Eli Foutz broke up the shutout with a four-yard touchdown run with 1:56 remaining in the first half, and the score was 21-7 at the break.

Shannon connected with Owen Sweeney early in the third quarter for a 52-yard scoring strike, then Anthony Allen scooped up a Ferrum fumble deep in Panther territory and returned it eight yards for a score, pushing the lead to 35-7 at 10:56 of the third. Shannon found Malik McNeely for a 31-yard touchdown pass at 4:57 of the third quarter to close out scoring.
