FERRUM, Va. – The Ferrum College women's basketball team beat UNC Pembroke in Conference Carolinas action at home, winning 58-53 tonight at Swartz Gym. The game was part of a league doubleheader in which Ferrum's also emerged victorious.

THE BASICS
Back-to-back layups by
Sofia Ponce and
Breyana Kimmons opened a 4-0 lead for the Panthers, but UNC Pembroke responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead. Ferrum answered that with a 9-2 run to go back out in front, with
Aleksandra Kubiak's three-pointer at 2:13 making it a 13-9 game. Kimmons made a layup, was fouled and made the ensuing free throw to close out the first quarter with Ferrum on top 18-11. The second quarter was a tight affair, and Ferrum held a 28-25 lead at the break.
Ponce had a put-back layup to open the third quarter and extend the lead to 30-25, but UNC Pembroke rallied to tie the game at 32-32. Ponce and Kimmons had layups to make it a 36-32 Ferrum lead with just over five minutes left in the third, then
Kleiauna Riddick made a reverse layup to make it a 38-34 lead at 3:02. The Braves closed to within a basket, 38-36, at the end of the third.
Tiana Spann made a pair of baskets early in the fourth quarter, and teammate Keziyah Sanders added a layup to give Pembroke a 42-41 lead at 6:46. Kimmons dropped a three-pointer at 5:32 to put Ferrum back on top 46-44, but the Braves answered at the other end of the floor with a basket to tie the game. Kimmons then drove the lane, was fouled while making a layup then converted the ensuing free throw to make it a 49-46 game at 4:46.
Taryn Blankenship made two free throws, then Kimmons made a driving layup to put Ferrum in front 52-49 with just under three minutes remaining in regulation. Kimmons made a pair of free throws with 46 seconds left to give Ferrum a 55-51 lead. Mosbacher drove the lane and made a layup with 11.5 seconds left to give Ferrum a 57-33 lead, then made one of two free throws with one second left for the final count.
