ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Ferrum College football team opened USA South Athletic Conference play with a 34-24 loss to North Carolina Wesleyan College this afternoon at Northern Nash Football Complex.
The Bishops posted 516 yards in total offense, and out-scored Ferrum 21-0 in the second quarter.
N.C. Wesleyan (2-2, 1-0 USA South) opened scoring with a 1-yard run by quarterback Bo Jordan at 8:08 of the first quarter. Ferrum answered right back, marching 80 yards on its next possession and cashing in on a 5-yard TD run by fullback
Matt Lucas with 4:11 left in the first.
Teron Bush scored on a 4-yard run at 13:22 of the second quarter, then Jordan hit Orlando Webb with a 17-yard scoring pass with 3:29 left in the second quarter to put the Bishops on top 21-7.
Ferrum fumbled on its next drive at the NCW 25 yard line and a face mask penalty on the Panthers moved the ball to the NCW 40 with 2:37 left in the first half. The Bishops then drove 60 yards in six plays and using just 1:50, scoring on Bryan Haywood's 2-yard run with 47 seconds left in the half.
Scott Puschell connected on a 37-yard field goal for Ferrum to trim the lead to 28-10 at 13:20 of the third quarter. N.C. Wesleyan would score again, this time on a Haywood 4-yard run to push the lead to 34-10 with 2:55 left in the third.
Backup QB Zach Lewis scored on a 13-yard run for the Panthers as the clock struck 0:00 to close the third quarter, then
Mike Vann scored an a 17-yard run at 11:34 on the fourth quarter to make the final score 34-24.
The Bishops posted 518 yards in total offense311 passing and 205 rushing. Ferrum had 370 yards in total offense, 300 rushing and 70 passing.
Jordan was near-perfect passing this afternoon, going 21-27 for 311 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. Starter
Matt Dobson was 1-6 passing for 26 yards with no TDs and no interceptions. Lewis was 1-2 passing for 44 yards, and also had no TDs or interceptions.
Bush led the Bishops with 117 yards and a score on 19 carries. Haywood had 91 yards and two scores on 17 carries.
Quintel Banks had 93 yards on 11 carries for Ferrum, while Lucas had 62 yards and a touchdown on seven attempts.
Ferrum (2-2, 0-1 USA South) will be at home next Saturday, Oct. 10, against Methodist University. The USA South contest will be played during Ferrum's Homecoming Weekend. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at W.B. Adam Stadium.
