Derek Mitchell had 20 points and 18 rebounds but it wasn't enough as Ferrum College suffered an 81-66 non-conference men's basketball loss to Eastern Mennonite University this afternoon at home.
Mitchell went 8-10 from the floor and 4-5 from the line. He pulled 15 of his 18 rebounds on the defensive boards. Mitchell broke Ferrum's career rebounds record this afternoon, topping former Panther standout Mike Robertson, who had 668 rebounds from 1990-93. Mitchell now has 672 career rebounds, just five games into his junior year.
Daryl Hart added 16 points on 7-12 shooting for the Panthers, while
Jerrell Wade had 11 points to go with six assists. The two teams were tied 31-31 at halftime, and out-rebounded the Royals 40-33.
Eastern Mennonite (5-0) had five players in double-figure scoring to remain unbeaten this season. George Johnson had 18 points, DJ Hinson had 14, Todd Phillips and Eli Crawford had 13 each, and Austin Twine had 10.
Ferrum (1-4) will return to action Monday, Dec. 30, at home against Emory & Henry College. The non-conference games tips off at 7 p.m. at Swartz Gym.
