FERRUM, Va. -- Down by 17 points, the Ferrum College men's basketball team rallied for an 81-75 non-conference win in overtime over Emory & Henry College tonight at Swartz Gym.
Ferrum trailed 34-17 with just over five minutes left in the first half, but closed with an 18-9 run to cut the gap to just eight points, 43-35 at the break. Over the first seven minutes of the second half, Coach Bill Tharp's team went on a 15-7 run, tying the game at 50-50 on a pair of
Charles Warren free throws.
The Wasps responded with an 18-4 run, punctuated by a pair of Damian Edwards free throws, to take a 68-54 lead at the 7:51 mark. Ferrum clawed its way back using tenacious defense and tied the game at 69-69 on two
Daryl Hart free throws with 1:69 left in regulation. Hart's jumper at 1:14, followed by
Nick English's jumper at 0:38 put Ferrum up 73-69, but Tyler Driver hit a jumper for the Wasps and Tyler Mullins knocked down two free throws with 23 second left to send the game into OT.
Hart and Javonte Rankin each made layups in the extra period to give the Panthers a 77-73 lead with 2:25 left, then Edwards trimmed the lead with a jumper at 1:52.
Donte Thomas and Warren each hit the front end of two free throws to push the lead to four at 79-75 with 16 second left in OT, and Warren's breakaway dunk closed out scoring. Hart and English each had 15 points for Ferrum,
Marcus Mayo had 14 and Warren had 13.
Edwards led Emory & Henry (2-2) with 17 points, including three baskets from behind the arc. Kyle Sansabaugh had 14 points, shooting 4-5 from the floor and 4-4 from long distance. Mullins, Malcolm Green and Charles Smith each added 10 points in the loss. The Wasps shot 43% from behind the arc and closed with a 38-30 rebounding edge.
Ferrum (2-2) returns to action Sunday, Nov. 27, at home against Randolph College. The non-conference game tips off at 2 p.m. at Swartz Gym.
