Tim Reynolds,
Scott Puschell and
Tarrell Owens had career games as Ferrum College beat North Carolina Wesleyan College 51-35 in USA South Athletic Conference football action this afternoon in front of a Homecoming crowd of 2758 fans at W.B. Adams Stadium.
Owens tied a school record with his three interceptions this afternoon. Four other players shared the record, most recently Rashad Price against Emory & Henry College in 2005. The other three include Paul Inoa against Chowan University in 2004, Tyrone Allen against Frostburg State University in 1996 and Melvin Dillard against Frostburg State in 1989.
Reynolds was 11-23 passing for 258 yards and two touchdowns. He three just one interception and was not sacked. Reynolds also rushed 16 times for 133 yards and a score.
Tyler Brubaker hauled in almost half of Reynolds' completions, making five catches for 69 yards and a score.
Makya Jackson made two long catches for 122 yards, including a 71-yard bomb in the second quarter.
Puschell was successful on all three field goal attempts he made today. He had a 44-yard field goal in the first quarter, a 29-yarder in the second and a 32-yarder in the fourth. Puschell also converted all six PATs he attempted for the Panthers.
The game opened with the Panthers unable to control the opening kickoff and the Bishops recovering the ball at Ferrum's 31 yard line. Three plays later, Jacques Alston cashed in with a three-yard plunge for a 7-0 Bishops lead. Ferrum came right back and scored following Reynolds' 63-yard and three-yard runs, and the game was tied 7-7 with just 1:15 having been played.
Timaine Moore put the Bishops on top 14-7 when he hauled in an 8-yard pass from John Jackson at 10:53 of the first quarter. Puschell then hit back-to-back field goals at 6:38 of the first and 12:18 of the second to trim the Bishops lead to 14-13.
Tyler Brubaker and
Makya Jackson scored TDs in the second quarter for Ferrum, both pass receptions from Reynolds. Brubaker scored on a 24-yard reception at 9:16, then after the Bishops could not move the ball on their next possession, Jackson hauled in the 71-yarder from Reynolds with 8:11 showing ion the clock to give Ferrum a 27-14 lead. Greg Edwards caught a 23-yard pass from Jackson with 1:45 left before halftime to trim the lead to 27-21.
BJ Jennings and
Jericho James scored rushing touchdowns for Ferrum in the third quarter, Jennings an eight-yard run and James a one-yarder to put Ferrum up 41-21 with 3:11 left in the quarter. Diante Nichols hauled in a nine-yard scoring strike from Jackson to end the quarter and trim Ferrum's lead to 41-28 after three quarters.
Edwards made his second TD reception of the day to open the fourth quarter and made it a 41-35 game. Puschell hit his third and final field goal of the game at 12:20, and Brubaker capped scoring with a 53-yard touchdown run with 2:12 left in the game.
Brubaker closed with 95 yards rushing and a touchdown and five receptions for 69 yards and a score. In all, he totaled 181 all-purpose yards. Jackson was 31-61 passing for 335 yards and four touchdowns for NCW. Jackson was picked off four times and sacked four times. Alston had 82 yards rushing and a score to lead the Bishops' running game.
Defensively,
Jatavious Adams and
Kenny Tapscott had nine tackles each for Ferrum (4-2, 2-1 USA South). Adams had a pair of sacks and recovered a fumble, while Tapscott had an interception.
Tevin Harden had eight tackles, including six solo stops and one for loss.
Chris Freycinet also had eight tackles, including two for loss and a pair of sacks. James Wallace had nine tackles to lead the Bishops (1-5, 0-3 USA South), while Gerald Wells had eight tackles.
Ferrum (4-2, 2-1 USA South) returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 20, at Methodist University. The USA South game gets underway at 1 p.m. in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
