FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College dropped its Homecoming football game 34-30 to USA South opponent North Carolina Wesleyan College this afternoon at W.B. Adams Stadium. Camara Rawls blocked a Ferrum punt in the fourth quarter, leading to the eventual game-winning score for the Bishops.
The Panthers trailed 27-14, but scored a pair of touchdowns and a safety to secure their only lead at 30-27, but Rawls' blocked punt with 8:15 left in the fourth quarter gave N.C. Wesleyan the ball on the Ferrum 14 yard line. Two plays later, Jacques Alston found the end zone to give the Bishops the win.
Tim Reynolds gave Ferrum a 7-0 lead with an 8-yard run in the first quarter, but N.C. Wesleyan came back and scored 12 seconds later on Alston's 60-yard run to make it 7-6 Ferrum. Later in the first quarter, Alston took a pass Dustin Midgett and scampered 73 yards for his second touchdown of the day.
Brice Wordsworth scored on a 14-yard reception from Midgett to open the second quarter and the Bishops led 20-7. Reynolds responded with a 4-yard run to trim the lead to 20-14 at 3:32 of the second, only to see Alston score 22 seconds later on a 41-yard run to give the Bishops a 27-14 halftime lead.
Troy Helton scored on a 20-yard reception from Reynolds to open the third quarter and Ferrum's defense recorded a safety and Ferrum trailed 27-23. The Panthers then drove 80 yards in seven plays, capped by Reynolds' 4-yard touchdown run to take their first lead of the day at 30-27 with 10:09 left to play. Rawls' blocked punt was recovered by Travonne Marshall at the Ferrum 14 yard line, where Alston scored two plays later.
Alston closed the afternoon with 218 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 25 carries for the Bishops (2-2, 1-1 USA South), 78 yards receiving with a touchdown on two receptions, and 20 yards on one kickoff return. Midgett was 7-14 passing for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Jaylon Johnson led the Bishop defense with 15 tackles, including seven solo stops. James Wallace and Michael Clemmons had 11 tackles each, and Stanley Danzey had 10 tackles.
Reynolds was 8-18 passing for 163 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions, and was sacked once. He added 109 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 23 carries. Helton had 79 yards on 11 carries, and added 44 yards and a score on two receptions.
Dominique Lesine had 119 yards on six catches.
Montel Lee had nine tackles to led Ferrum's defensive unit, while
Shy Smith and
Raul Gonzalez had six tackles each.
Ferrum (0-3, 0-1 USA South) returns to action Saturday, Oct. 4, at Christopher Newport University. The USA South game gets underway at 7:00 p.m. in Newport News, Virginia. The Captains are in their last season as a football-only member of the USA South before moving on to play the New Jersey Athletic Conference in time for the 2015 season.
