Marlins Down Ferrum in ODAC Men's Basketball

FERRUM, Virginia -- Calvin Washington had a game-high 28 points on 12-17 shooting from the floor, but Ferrum College dropped its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball opener this afternoon at home to Virginia Wesleyan University, falling 80-68 at Swartz Gym.

THE BASICS
Deshone Hicks and Tahli Oden hit jumpers, then Ayden Gamble knocked down a three-pointer to get Ferrum off to a red-hot 7-0 start in the first two and a half minutes of play. Virginia Wesleyan responded with an 8-2 run to trim the lead to 9-8 at the 14:46 mark.

Washington's layup at 12:51 put Ferrum up 16-13, but the Marlins went on a 15-4 run over the next six plus minutes to open a 28-20 lead on Eric Rowland's three-pointer at 6:04. Hicks dropped a trey at the 2:36 mark to cut Ferrum's deficit to 32-31, and Virginia Wesleyan would eventually tale a 40-36 lead into the break.

The Marlins held a four-point lead four minutes into the second half before eventually extending the lead to 17 points on Khai Seargeant's pullup jumper in the paint to make it a 69-52 game with 7:31 left to play. Gamble's three pointer at 1:15 and a pair of Hicks driving layups in the final of minute of play closed out scoring for Ferrum.

NEXT UP
Coach Patrick Corrigan's team will be back in action Wednesday, November 30, at home against University of Lynchburg. The ODAC game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m., following a 5:00 p.m. ODAC women's game between Ferrum and Roanoke College.
