Averett Tops Ferrum in Five Sets

DANVILLE, Virginia -- Averett university overcame a 2-0 deficit to pick up an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) volleyball win over Ferrum College, winning 3-2 tonight at E. Stuart James Grant Center. Set scores were 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-9, 15-9.

THE BASICS
Ferrum took a 17-11 lead in the first set, before Averett tied things up 17-17, on attack error. The Panthers then scored the last three points on AU attack errors to win the first set.

In the second set, Ferrum led 14-6 before the Cougars used a 10-2 run to get within one, 23-22. The Panthers ended the set on a Shelby Waltrip to Kenzee Chaffin kill.

In the third set, Ferum led 22-17, before Averett closed the set out on a 8-1 run to keep the match alive. In the fourth set, Averett scored the first eight points and closed it out on a 8-5 run to send the match to a fifth set.

Averett scored the first 10 points of the fifth set to take a commanding lead. The Panthers got four straight points to pull within 14-9, but the Cougars won the match on a Destiny Mcintosh kill.

Coach Shelbylynn Adair's team will be back in action Saturday, October 7, at home against Winston-Salem State University and Carolina University. The non-conference tri-match is set for matches at  9:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. in Swartz Gym.
