DANVILLE, Virginia -- Ferrum College's wrestling team competed over the weekend at the Cougar Open, hosted Sunday, November 10, at Averett University's Grant Center. The Panthers entered 18 wrestlers, with five place-winners, including two finalists.

THE BASICS
No team scores were kept at the event. Trent Proctor (133 lbs) and Gabriel Cortes (165) reached the title match of their respective weight classes, both posting 4-1 marks on the day.

Proctor picked up a pin and a major decision en route to the finals. He posted a 9-1 major decision over Emory & Henry College's Johnathan Almany in the semifinals. In the title match, Proctor lost by fall to Roanoke College's Jonah Paulino.

Cortes posted two pins, a tech fall and a major decision. He pinned Tyler Tarallo of Shenandoah University in the semifinals, then lost by fall to Roanoke's Jack Bobeck for the championship.

Deandre Johnson (285) finished third with a 4-1 mark, including three pins and a major decision. Johnson lost by fall to unattached wrestler Ajay Hiller in the semifinals, then pinned the Apprentice School's Kaleb Ivie in the third-place match.

Josiah Canales (141) went 3-2 with three pins to place fourth. Cameron Curva (149) picked up three pins and a pair of tech falls to place sixth. Curva was unable to wrestle in the 6th-place match because he had already wrestled in the NCAA-maximum six matches.
