FERRUM, Va. -- Conference Carolinas has released its Players of the Week for football and two Ferrum College players have been included in the honors. Freshman wide receiver
Omarza Gray earned Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore linebacker
Ryan Schmidt was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Gray made six receptions for a school record 203 yards in Ferrum's 28-25 comeback win over Shorter University Saturday, October 4, at home. His 203 receiving yards is a Conference Carolinas record as well. Gray also had a pair of kick returns for 33 yards and totaled 236 all-purpose yards for the day.
Schmidt blocked a Shorter field goal attempt in the first quarter. Teammate
Jamarion Montford scooped up the loose ball in stride and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown, a 10-point swing and a huge momentum shift for the Panthers. Shorter opened the second quarter with a touchdown and looked to tie the score, but Schmidt blocked the ensuing PAT attempt, to keep Ferrum out in front at 7-6.
This is the second Conference Carolinas honor for Gray, who earned Special Teams Player of the Week on September 1 after a stellar game against Catawba College August 30 on the road. This is the first league honor for Schmidt.
Coach Kevin Sherman's team will be back in action Saturday, October 11, at home against Barton College. The Conference Carolinas gme is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at W.B. Adams Stadium and and will be the showcase event for Ferrum's Homecoming Weekend.Â
