HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Ferrum College's wrestling team opened the season today at the James Madison University Invitational, pushing 10 wrestlers into the finals and crowning five individual champions.
THE BASICS
Ferrum's 10 finalists were spread out over nine weight classes, with three title bouts that featured a pair of Panther wrestlers. Earning individual titles today were
Riley Conway (125 lbs),
Josiah Canales Maldonado (133),
Cameron Curva (149),
Andres Cortes (157) and
Joseph Toner (184).
Conway won his title match with a 3:41 pin over UNC-Charlotte's Logan Smith, while Canales eked out a 7-6 win over Apprentice School's Alden Vasquez. Curva went 4-0 on the day, beating teammate
Hayden Thompson by tech fall 19-2 in the finals. Cortes earned a tough decision in the finals over JMU's Brady Bollander, winning 7-4, while Toner capped his title run with a win by default in the finals.Â
