Softball Sweeps Methodist at Home

FERRUM, Virginia -- Starting pitchers Emily Wood and Amber Greiner pitched complete games in the opener and nightcap, respectively, to help Ferrum College's softball team earn a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Methodist University. Game scores were 5-0 in game one and 7-3 in game two this afternoon at Vickie Van Kleeck Field.

GAME ONE
Mirenda Shields walked with the bases loaded to drive in a run in the bottom of the first inning, then Nicole Emerson had a two-run shot to right field in the second inning to make it a 3-0 game. Sophia Peters' double to right in the third pushed two more runs across the plate and that was all thr scoring either team would get from there. Wood pitched a seven-inning game to earn her first collegiate win, allowing four hits, no runs and striking out six batters.

GAME TWO
In the nightcap, the Monarchs took the early lead after scoring a run each in the first and third innings to go out ihn front 2-0. Ferrum answered with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Peters singled through the right side to drive in two runs, then Macie Bell doubled to left center and Carson Hogston singled to center to rive in a run each. Methodist scored a run in the fifth inning to trim the lead to 4-3, but Ferrum answered with three runs in the sixth, one on Kaylee Hughes' double to left center and two on Emily Hopper's double to left center. Greiner also earned her first collegiate win, pitching a seven-inning game, allowing five hits and two earned runs, while striking out four MU batters.

UP NEXT
Coach Joshua Freeman's team will be back in action Sunday, March 2, at home against Albion College. The non-conference doubleheader is set for a noon start at VVK Field.
