DANVILLE, Virginia -- Ferrum College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader at Averett University, dropping the opener 2-1 then taking the nightcap 4-3 this afternoon at Cougar Field.

GAME 1
Kaylee Hughes scored on a throwing error in the third inning to spot Ferrum a 1-0 lead. Averett's Madison Akers then belted a two-run homer over the center field fence in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Cougars hung on for the win.
Sophia Peters went 2-3 at the plate with a double for the Panthers. Hannah Zabik pitched a complete seven-inning game for Averett, striking out seven Ferrum batters.
GAME 2
Macie Bell's RBI single to center field in the top of the fourth inning drove in a pair of runs to put Ferrum out in front 2-0 in the nightcap. Averett picked up a run in the fifth inning, but Ferrum answered that in the sixth with a Bell RBI single to left-center to extend the Panthers' lead to 3-1. The Cougars added a pair of runs in the seventh inning to force the extra inning, then Ferrum's
Emily Wood scored the winning run on a fielding error in the eighth.
Bell and
Nicole Emerson each had a pair of base hits for Ferrum. Starter Amber Griner pitched seven innings to improve to 5-6 in the circle this season, with
Wynema Thomas earning the same after pitching the eighth inning.
UP NEXT
Coach Joshus Freeman's team will be back in action Tuesday, April 22, at home against University of Lynchjburg. The ODAC doubleheader is scheduled for as 4:00 p.m. start at VVK Field, and is designated Ferrum's Softball Staff Appreciation Day.
