WINCHESTER, Virginia -- Ferrum College's softball team closed out regular season play this afternoon on the road with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader split at Shenandoah University. The Panthers dropped the opener 7-2, then took the nightcap 8-4.

GAME 1
Autumn McMillen's RBI single to center field in the first inning drove in a run for the early 1-0 Ferrum lead, but Shenandoah scored a run in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game.
Kaylee Hughes' RBI single to second base in the second inning gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Shenandoah scored a run in the third to tie the game at 2-2, then picked up four more in the fourth and one in the fifth to close out scoring. Ferrum starter

GAME 2
Georgia Carter's RBI double to center field in the top of the first inning pushed two runs across the plate, then
Mirenda Shields singled to right-center to drive in another run and the Panthers held the early 3-0 lead. The Hornets scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first to trim the lead to 3-1.
Nicole Emerson's sac fly to left field in the second inning drove in a run, then Hughes scored on a wild pitch to extend Ferrum's lead to 5-1 after two full innings.

The Hornets scored three runs in the bottom of the third to get the lead down to 5-4, but Ferrum answered with a run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, then played defense and hung on for the split. Hughes went 3-3 with a run and an RBI. Reliever
Amber Greiner (6-7) got the win, pitching the final four and a third innings with four hits, no runs and three strikeouts.

Josh Freeman's team will play in the ODAC Softball Tournament as the #6 seed this week. The Panthers will face #6 Randolph-Macon College in the first round Saturday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. at James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.
