FERRUM, Va. — Ferrum College is proud to announce its 2025 Sports Hall of Fame class, honoring nine former student-athletes whose accomplishments reflect the College's tradition of athletic excellence and community leadership. This year's class includes four baseball players, two football players, one men's basketball player, one women's basketball player, and one two-sport athlete.
"At Ferrum College, we celebrate not just athletic excellence, but the enduring impact our alumni make on their communities and the world," said Ferrum College President Mirta Martin. "This Hall of Fame class represents the very best of what it means to be a Panther—resilient, service-minded, and committed to living our motto, Not Self, But Others. We are proud to honor their legacies and welcome them back home to Ferrum."
The Ferrum College Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025 inductees are:
Chuck Banks '84 – Football
Randallstown, Maryland
An All-American First Team selection and Senior Bowl MVP at Ferrum, Banks continued his career at West Virginia Tech, where he earned All-Conference honors and led the team in rushing as a senior. In 1986, he became WV Tech's first-ever NFL draft pick, selected by the Houston Oilers in the 12th round. He also played for the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets. Today, Banks is the CEO of a prominent youth football camp in Baltimore and actively supports the Fort Bend Volunteer Fire Department in Indianapolis through fundraising initiatives.
Heath Deaver '90 (formerly Heath Burcher) – Baseball
Yorktown, Virginia
A standout on the diamond, Deaver earned All-America, All-Region, and All-Conference First Team honors in both 1989 and 1990 and was named to the USA South 50th Anniversary Team. He has spent 27 years with Virginia Natural Gas, rising to Superintendent of Construction. Deaver has dedicated his post-collegiate life to mentoring youth through coaching and volunteer roles in multiple sports organizations throughout York County.
Dustin Hamoy '08 – Football
Baltimore, Maryland
A four-year starter at running back, Hamoy rushed for 1,827 yards and 22 touchdowns while also excelling as a receiver and return specialist. He was part of Ferrum's 2005 USA South championship team and was named Academic All-American in 2006. After graduating magna cum laude, he earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and now serves as Medical Director/CEO of multiple rehabilitation centers. Hamoy holds a utility patent and several trademarks, including the "Ab Spider" core trainer and a rehabilitation device to aid ambulation.
Paul Jaglowski '12 – Baseball
Raleigh, North Carolina
Jaglowski capped a stellar career with Academic All-America First Team honors and was named 2012 USA South Baseball Player of the Year. He was also a four-time Academic All-Conference honoree and served as team captain. After graduation, he founded Feedtrail, a software company focused on improving patient experience in healthcare. He has worked as a consultant and analyst, and remains active in nonprofit work supporting children in Haiti.
Derek Mitchell '11 – Men's Basketball
Henrico, Virginia
One of Ferrum's most accomplished athletes, Mitchell is the College's only NCAA Division III First Team All-American. He earned numerous accolades, including USA South Player and Rookie of the Year and South Region Player of the Year. He remains Ferrum's all-time rebounding leader and #2 all-time scorer. Following a professional playing career in Germany, Mitchell became a Henrico County firefighter and is a nationally registered paramedic.
Ashley Norton '10 – Women's Basketball
Collinsville, Virginia
Norton was a four-year starter and point guard for Ferrum, helping lead the Panthers to the 2006–07 USA South title. She broke the school record for single-game assists with 16 and earned All-Tournament and All-Conference honors. Norton has served for over 13 years in law enforcement with the Henry County Sheriff's Office, where she is now a School Resource Officer. She lives by Ferrum's motto: Not Self, But Others.
Stephanie Schreyer '08 (formerly Stephanie Perih) – Women's Soccer/Lacrosse
Apollo Beach, Florida
A two-sport athlete, Schreyer ranks among the top 10 in multiple lacrosse records and earned All-Conference and All-State honors in both sports. Now a pediatric nurse practitioner in the ICU at Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital in Florida, she continues to pursue her doctorate in nursing. Schreyer previously worked in Bolivia and is the proud mother of three children.
Brett Thomas '07 – Baseball
Norfolk, Virginia
Thomas earned All-America honors in 2007 and helped lead Ferrum to multiple USA South championships and NCAA tournament appearances. His 15 home runs in 2007 earned him an NCAA Division III statistical title. Thomas holds Ferrum's single-season hits record and ranks third in career hits. He played professional baseball briefly and continues to mentor youth through coaching.
Russel Walton '90 – Football/Baseball
Appomattox, Virginia
A two-sport athlete under Coaches Hank Norton and Abe Naff, Walton epitomized quiet leadership and resilience. The Ferrum baseball program's annual resilience award bears his name. Diagnosed with ALS, he has continued to lead by example, founding a nonprofit that supports ALS and cystic fibrosis research. His annual golf fundraiser tournament brings together alumni and community members in a celebration of strength and service. Walton's story is a living embodiment of Ferrum's creed: Not Self, But Others.
Hall of Fame Ceremony
The 2025 inductees will be formally honored during an on-campus Hall of Fame Ceremony on the morning of Saturday, September 13. Later that day, they will be recognized during halftime of Ferrum's home football game against Shaw University, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. at W.B. Adams Stadium.
