SALEM, Va. -- The Ferrum College men's basketball team posted its third win in as many games this season with an 81-73 win over host Roanoke College this afternoon in the 2010 Dick Leftwich V-Foundation Classic at the Homer Bast Center.

The win gave Ferrum the team championship, as both teams had previously beaten Warren Willson College, the tournament's other team, over the weekend.

Derek Mitchell had 25 points and 16 rebounds for the Panthers, both game-high totals. Lamont King added 17 points, Marcus Mayp 16 and Keith Crump 11.

Ferrum led by as many as 13 points in the first half before taking a 36-30 lead into the locker room. The Maroons battled back to tie the game twice in the second half, the last time on a Melvin Felix jumper with 4:58 left to play.

The Panthers responded with layups by Mitchell and King, and a Mayo jumper to go back up by six at 74-68. Keith Crump hit six free throws down the stretch to seal the win for Ferrum.

Felix led Roanoke (1-1) with 18 points and Jack Hamilton had 14 in the loss. Both were named to the All-Tournament team along wih Warren Wilson's Timur Oktay, and Ferrum's Mitchell and King. Mitchell was the tournament MVP after posting 43 points and 22 rebounds in two days. King totaled 27 points and nine boards.

Ferrum (3-0) is back in action Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Emory & Henry College in Emory. After the Thanksgiving break, Coach Bill Tharp's team will play at Randolph College Nov. 29 in Lynchburg. Both non-conference games get underway at 7 p.m.
