LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Ferrum College men's basketball team needed overtime to defeat non-conference opponent Randolph College 70-68 tonight on the road.
Ferrum led by 10 at halftime, only to see the Wildcats post a 39-29 advantage in the second half to send the game into OT tied at 62-62. The Panthers led 62-59 with 0:01 left in regulation when Randolph's Pete Hamilton hit a three-point shot to send the game into overtime.
Derek Mitchell tied the game at 66-66 with a jumper with 1:54 left in OT, then
Marcus Mayo drilled a three-pointer with 0:23 remaining to put Ferrum up 69-66. Colton Hunt and Hamilton each made one of two free throws to cut the lead to 69-68. Ferrum's Darryl Hart hit a free throw for the final 70-68 score.
Keith Crump led all scorers with 25 points to help Ferrum remain unbeaten. Crump was 7-16 from the floor, including 3-5 from behind the three-point line, 8-10 from the line and added six assists and a steal.
Mayo, who two weeks ago was named the 2010 USA South Football Offensive Player of the Year, had 16 points tonight for the Panthers. He added three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Mitchell notched his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. He leads the team in both scoring (15 ppg) and rebounding (16 rpg).
Hunt led Randolph (3-2) with 18 points, while Hamilton had 16. Derrick Woods-Morrow added 12 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
Ferrum (5-0) returns to action Monday, Dec. 6, at home against Washington and Lee University. The non-conference game gets underway at 7 p.m. in Swartz Gymnasium.
