FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College's men led by as many as 11 points and held on for a 70-68 USA South win over Greensboro College tonight at Swartz Gym.
The Panthers led 34-32 at halftime, shooting 42% in the first half. Ferrum widened the lead to 59-48 with seven minutes remaining in the second half on a
Ryan Firebaugh lay-up. Greensboro went on a 20-11 run to close out the game.
Ferrum was led by
Derek Mitchell, who had 20 points and 14 rebounds, his 15th double-double this season.
J.T. Edwards added 11 points.
Prior to the game, Mitchell was honored for having scored his 1000th career point. Mitchell notched the milestone in Ferrum's 62-49 loss at NCAA Division I opponent Winston-Salem State University Feb. 4 on the road. Mitchell becomes the 13th player in school history to join the 1000-Point Club.
Greensboro ( 9-12, 2-6 USA South) was led by Chakiris Moss, who had 16 points, including a pair of three-point baskets. Adam Powell had 12 points, Walter Brady had 11 points and Luqman Tijani had 10 points.
Ferrum (10-12, 4-5 USA South) returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 10, at Shenandoah University. The USA South doubleheader tips off at 5:30 p.m. with the women's game and will be followed immediately by the men.
