FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Ferrum College shot a scorching 34-67 (50.7%) from the field to claim a 79-56 USA South road victory over Methodist University inside the March F. Riddle Center.
Ferrum wasted little time offensively, jumping out to an early 12-3 advantage, capped by a Derek Mitchell dunk. Methodist would close the gap to 12-10, with 13:07 showing on the clock. From there, the Panthers (13-1, 2-0 USA South) outscored the Monarchs 28-15 to end the half ahead 40-25.
The first two-and-half minutes of the second frame were no different than the first half, as Ferrum used a 10-0 run to double-up Methodist 50-25. A Garry Brandt layup gave Ferrum its' largest lead at 76-47.
Mitchell posted yet another double-double, with 22 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Panthers in scoring. Keith Crump stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, and game-highs of seven helpers and six takeaways. Daryl Hart connected on half of his shots to post 13 points.
Ferrum turned 16 Monarch mistakes into 16 points. Methodist (4-9, 0-1 USA South) was led in scoring by Terrell Stallings with 13 points and Bryan Hockaday notching 11.
The Panthers return home for a Wednesday, Jan. 8, date with Greensboro College. The USA South doubleheader gets underway at 5:30 p.m. with the women's game; the men's game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
