LEXINGTON, Va. -- A well-balanced scoring output from the starting five and a 48-point second half helped Ferrum College to a 77-72 non-conference men's basketball win over Washington and Lee University in the first round of the 2013 W&L Tip-Off Tournament.
The Panthers trailed by 16 at halftime, 46-30, but outscored the Generals 47-26 in the second half to post the come-from-behind season opener win. Four starters scored in double figures as Ricky Estrada and
Rashawn Speas had 13 points each,
Brian Clarke had 12 and
Jamal Pullen had 11.
Clarke narrowly missed a triple-double with 10 assists and eight rebounds to go with his 12 points.
Tyler Mann had nine points,
Jordan Mann had eight and starter
Alek Ayer had seven. Estrada drained four three-pointers for the Panthers and added four assists. Ayer also had four assists.
Washington and Lee (0-1) got 19 points from Kevin Gill, 17 points and 10 rebounds from Drew Kimberly, and 13 points each from Clay McLean and Andrew Franz.
Ferrum (1-0) will face Defiance (Ohio) College for the tournament title Saturday, Nov. 16, at 4:00 p.m. Live stats will be available. The Yellow Jackets posted an 87-47 beating on Southern Virginia University in Friday's night's other game. The Generals take on Southern Virginia in the consolation game at 2:00 p.m.
